Retopologizing CAD data

CAD to render

The Job

URBAN Automotive creates bodykits and aftermarket components for luxury and high end cars.  As part of my day to day responsibilities, I prepare render models for all the URBAN's bodykits.  Most of the time I have to fit and retopologize the CAD data to fit the models better.  Doing this also helps improve the normals and reflections in renders, especially in close ups.

The process

I start by sourcing a render model to use as a base.  Then once I have been sent the CAD data from our CAD designer, I will begin the retopology process.

This involves lining up the CAD to the render model.  Unfortunately in most cases, the CAD doesn't line up too great with the models as they are typically inaccurate to the real car.  So I have to correct the size until it sits close enough.  I can then start creating a new mesh following the shape of the donor model.  This is a fun process that involves a lot of planning and subdivision modelling.  I can normally ignore the clip data on these as they are hidden by the render models.
